Eating Paleo Diet with kids
As I have talked about many times on this blog, about six weeks ago our whole family switched our eating habits so that we were eating a healthy Paleo diet, or as I like to call it, eating real food. And well, the kids were not thrilled.
So what is a Paleo diet or real food? Real food is food that is not processed. Nothing that is processed with artificial ingredients. Keeping out packaged foods. Making sure that everything we eat is healthy real food.
Basically think of it this way, when we go grocery shopping we spend almost all our time and all our money on the outside isles of the store. Lots of vegetables, meat, fruit, nuts, eggs… that type of stuff.
Getting everyone on board
Part of really committing to eating a healthy Paleo diet is getting everyone in the house on board. It makes it a lot easier to resist those temptations when there are no temptations in the house.
Of course it makes it hard to get everyone on board when you have four kids between the age of 6 and 12 and they don’t really care about eating healthy. They don’t come along easily. When we made this switch we sat down with the kids and discussed why. We watched some shows like “Fat Head” to help drill in our thinking.
No matter how much education we did, the first 3-4 weeks involved a lot of yelling and screaming and tears about the new healthy lifestyle. It got to the point where we wondered if it was worth it. Well, good thing we did not stop. Now there are almost no tears and the kids are fully on board. I have actually seen them turn things down like soda, cookies and muffins.
My 10-year old went on a field trip a few weeks ago and the school supplied them pizza for lunch. Later that day she told us she didn’t feel great and had no energy at all. We asked her if she knew why and her answer was, it is probably that pizza I had for lunch. That brought a big smile to dad’s face.
Then yesterday happened. I opened up my RSS reader and saw that my 12-year old decided to write a couple of blog posts. After reading them I realized we were really winning. What we were trying to do was really sinking in.
I will put the two blog posts below so you can see what I mean. But parents, if you are trying to make the switch and you have kids you will get resistance. You will get a lot of resistance. But what we have learned is don’t give up. Eventually they will come around and enjoy the new healthy paleo diet.
Why not? There is no point in eating junk food. People think it’s a treat when really it makes you feel worse. Junk food can make you sick or mess up your blood sugar. There is absolutely NO point in eating any junk food. It’s okay to have to have a little once and a while or on special occasions, but every time you see it? If you were to go without junk food you’d see how much junk food you see every day everywhere you go. So if you want to be unhealthy, I don’t care, go ahead and have junk food this so called “treat”. But trust me, you’ll regret it big time!
Halloween is almost here. That can only mean one thing for kids out there. Candy. Why not just have fun dressing up and going door to door and donate all of your candy? I mean you can keep around ten pieces or something but buckets full? That must never get finished! I know some people who have their candy for dinner. That is totally unhealthy. So this year you should just choose a couple of pieces and donate the rest. If not then try to only have one or two pieces a day so you don’t get sick. Why do people give out candy? Why not a pencil or something else that won’t destroy your life?
