Why I ditched Slack and saved £1,000 using ClickUp Chat
Are you paying twice for the same tool?
My team was until I realised ClickUp Chat could replace Slack and save us £1,000 a year.
Slack was cool but it came with a price tag.
I was already using ClickUp for project management.
A while back they came out with ClickUp chat. Then I noticed they had upgraded their Chat features.
So I thought, Why not consolidate everything under one roof?
Here’s what ClickUp Chat offers:
Group chats, direct messages, and announcement channels
Built-in video calls, with recording and AI summaries coming soon
Automation superpowers: alerts, webhooks, and auto answers based on your workspace
With ClickUp Chat, I got to save money, simplify my workflow, and tap into some cool features that I didn't have before.
Here's how I made the move from Slack.
Downgraded Slack
We switched Slack to the free plan, buying a few months to ease our transition.
That meant we lost connections with a few external clients, but we now handle those via email.
Rebuilt my alerts and automations
I had setup Slack alerts for when there were errors in my code or a server.
All of those, plus call transcriptions are now going to ClickUp instead using its API, Python, and Make.
I also revamped my automated telephone tester that pings phone lines like a website check. If it goes silent, I get an instant alert in ClickUp Chat.
Implemented new features
Linking messages directly to tickets for quick access
AI catch up mode. If you've been on holiday for a week, just get the AI to get you up to speed with what you missed.
I learned a few things throughout this migration process 👇
You should leverage what you already pay for. If you're already using ClickUp, why pay extra for another tool?
ClickUp was made for automations. Their API has been around for ages and integrates nicely with Make. That means anyone on your team can make or tweak automations because Make is such a visual platform.
The one down side with those alerts I built is that the alerts technically come from my ClickUp account. So I don't actually get pinged about them.
There are ways around this but the fact everyone else on the team gets notified and it's silent for me is actually quite nice right now.
“But Slack is familiar” I hear you say.
Yup. ClickUp Chat is different.
But my team adapted quickly. Once it's all setup, it works like Slack but with extra features.
The cost (and headache) of juggling multiple tools is far higher than the learning curve.
Moving to ClickUp Chat took a bit of upfront effort, but the payoff was worth it.
A simpler tech stack, more cohesive teamwork, and an extra £1,000 to reinvest into the team.

Remember, you don’t need another tool. The key is to just maximise the one you already have.
